Speed to pace calculator

Enter a running speed in km/h or mph. You get pace per kilometer and per mile, plus 5K, 10K and marathon times at that speed.

To convert speed in km/h to pace, divide 60 by the speed. At 12 km/h the pace is 5:00 per kilometer, which is 8:03 per mile. In mph, divide 60 by the speed to get minutes per mile, so 7.5 mph is 8:00 per mile.

How to convert speed to pace

  1. If the speed is in mph, multiply by 1.609344 to get km/h.
  2. Divide 60 by the speed in km/h to get minutes per kilometer.
  3. Keep the whole number as minutes and multiply the decimal part by 60 for seconds.
  4. For pace per mile, multiply the pace per kilometer by 1.609344.

Example: 11 km/h. 60 ÷ 11 = 5.4545 minutes. 0.4545 × 60 = 27 seconds, so the pace is 5:27 per kilometer, or 8:47 per mile.

Pace or speed: which should you use?

Pace is the unit used by most training plans, race goals and running watches. Speed is the unit most treadmill displays show. A treadmill that shows 12 km/h is giving you a 5:00 per kilometer pace, so convert it when you compare with a plan. If your machine shows mph, use the mph to min/mile converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to min/km?

Divide 60 by your speed in km/h. At 12 km/h the pace is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per kilometer, or 5:00. For a speed like 11 km/h, 60 ÷ 11 = 5.45 minutes, which is 5:27.

What pace is 10 km/h?

10 km/h is 6:00 per kilometer, which is 9:39 per mile. At that speed a 5K takes 30:00 and a 10K takes 1:00:00.

How do I convert pace to speed?

Divide 60 by the pace in minutes. A pace of 5:30 per kilometer is 5.5 minutes, so the speed is 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.91 km/h, or 6.78 mph.

Should I train by pace or by speed?

Pace is the unit most race plans and watches use, so it is easier to compare with a goal time. Speed is what most treadmill displays show. Use this converter to move between the two.
