Mile pace calculator

Enter a distance and your time. You get pace per mile and per kilometer, plus speed in mph and km/h.

Mile pace is the time it takes to run one mile. To find it, divide your total time by your distance in miles. A 30-minute 5K works out to 9:39 per mile, and an 8-minute mile equals 7.5 mph, or about 4:58 per kilometer.

How to calculate mile pace

  1. Convert the distance to miles. Divide kilometers by 1.609344.
  2. Convert the time to seconds.
  3. Divide the time in seconds by the distance in miles.
  4. Write the result as minutes and seconds.

Example: a 5K in 25:00. The distance is 5 ÷ 1.609344 = 3.107 miles. The time is 1,500 seconds. 1,500 ÷ 3.107 = 482.8 seconds, which is 8:03 per mile.

Convert mile pace to mph and kilometers

Want the full method, with examples and common mistakes? Read how to calculate running pace.

Speed in mph is 60 divided by the pace in minutes per mile. Pace per kilometer is the pace per mile divided by 1.609344, because one mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters. An 8:00 mile is 7.5 mph and 4:58 per kilometer. If your treadmill shows speed instead of pace, use the mph to min/mile converter. To switch between miles and kilometers, use the mile to km pace calculator, and for the whole range of paces see the running pace chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my mile pace?

Divide your total time by your distance in miles. A 25-minute 5K covers 3.107 miles, so 25 divided by 3.107 gives about 8:03 per mile. The calculator above does this for any distance.

What is an 8-minute mile in mph?

An 8-minute mile equals 7.5 miles per hour, or about 12.07 kilometers per hour. To convert any mile pace to mph, divide 60 by the pace in minutes. For 8:00, that is 60 divided by 8.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide the pace in minutes per mile by 1.609344. A 10:00 mile is 6:13 per kilometer. To go the other way, multiply the minutes per kilometer by 1.609344.

How fast is a 10-minute mile?

A 10-minute mile is 6.0 mph and 6:13 per kilometer. At that pace you finish a 5K in 31:04, a half marathon in 2:11:06 and a marathon in 4:22:11.
